Hi all.

I started learning Mandarin Chinese at uni half a year ago, and I plan to continue it until the completion of my degree, with major status. I just came back from spending a month in Guangzhou, and I also love Cantonese and am learning it by myself and with aid of my Cantonese girlfriend.

I prefer traditional writing, though my Uni mandates all handed in and assessed work must be in simplified! :( I'll get over it. I'm also studying Japanese and Korean, and I find the unification and similarity of these three (four) languages in their roots to be fascinating, and aiding in study!

Looking forward to reading from you all.

Arlen

Ooh Cantonese is so hard! Jia you!

The history stuff is fascinating, all the occupations and trading and everything and how cultures have mixed and influenced one another...and it all goes back so far! I think the respective occupations of the countries has had an interesting impact on the languages. I got to learn about that last quarter. XD

Thank you!

Actually... though I do love the history stuff, it's more about the actual similarities and changes between languages which I find more interesting. Same goes when you can extend to Vietnamese, which in earlier times (I believe?) was even written with Chinese characters.
